Gear News jeFFrey rader gets Fuel haNdliNg job J effrey Rader Corporation has been awarded a contract to supply an alternative fuel mate- rial handling and boiler feed sys- tem in Jeonju, South Korea. The system will be part of a 100MW cogen plant that will supply power and process steam for a newsprint mill. “This is an inno- vative project, the first of its kind in South Korea.” says Ted Gen- tile, manager of international sales for the company. The Jeon- ju Paper Mill will replace an old- er coal fired boiler using a grate fired system with a bubbling flu- idized bed design capable of fir- ing a mixture of alternative waste fuels consisting of bark, Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) pellets, DIP sludge and plastics rejects from the mill’s recycled fiber process Delivery of this state-of-the- art alternative fuel feeding sys- tem begins in March 2009, and it is anticipated to be put into full operation by the end of 2009. The Jeffrey Rader-supplied ma- terial handling and boiler feed system will supply more than 30 tons per hour of waste fuels to the BFB Boiler. It uses pneumatic conveyors to transport fuel to a receiving hopper which distrib- utes fuel into two boiler house mounted storage silos. Fuel is then reclaimed with screw re- claimers and distributed and metered into four infeed points around the boiler with a high level of reliability and accuracy. “Because of the wide range of ac- ceptable fuels, the system must be very flexible in its design as well as robust and reliable since it provides 100% of the fuel to this boiler” says Gentile. www. jeffreyrader.com griNdiNg slower to make more? Woodpecker Energy was born out of Irelands’ longest estab- lished boiler manufacturer, Gerkros Boilers, which also manufactured oil boilers and supplied other heat- ing products throughout Ireland & the UK. However, the Woodpecker range of biomass boilers was the jewel in the crown, as the most popular biomass boiler sold in Brit- ain and Ireland, with a host of envi- ronmental awards to its name, and so is now a stand-alone product for this new manufacturer. The Woodpecker ranges in output from 15 kw to 45 kw and is fully automated. Models come in indoor and outdoor versions. The Woodpecker boilers are available in self cleaning models, making them virtually maintenance free, and achieve efficiencies of 94% when tested to EN14785 standards. The Woodpecker range of boilers is also UL & CSA listed, making it one of the few European biomass appli- ances allowed to be sold in Canada and the USA. MARCH 2009 rom waste wood to green waste, from fine to coarse – the CRAMBO slow speed dual-shaft shredder from Komptech can do it all but without higher fuel consumption. With a few selective al- terations, the CRAMBO has become even more economical, and now with the right operator control the machine is even more energy-effi- cient. The hydraulic drive design of the CRAMBO continues to allow the machine to respond to the material and job at hand. Contractors need to produce the highest volume of material within the short- est time, and also to be able to shred all the material types required. Using load-sensing speed regulation, shredding is always performed with the maximum possible drum rotation speed. A mechanical drive generally only knows one rotation speed. A Cat diesel engine delivers the power for this, and at a lower RPM level than most units for up to a 20% reduction in fuel con- sumption with no significant production loss. Also, reversing shifts the material and cleans the drum and screen baskets, improving the shredding process. For tough green waste in particular, a new pro- gram with shortened reversing times yields an increase in throughput of up to 15%. At the same time, fuel consumption drops by the same amount. This reversing option is not possible on most direct driven machines, according to Komptech. www.komptech.com
