Welcome to the Canadian Bioeconomy Conference and Exhibition. Over the three days of the conference, there will be many opportunities to learn more about the industry here in British Columbia as well as the latest global trends in markets, policy, products, technology and project deployment. We are pleased you can join us in the centre of one of the largest biomass fibre baskets in the world.

Delegates will have two unique opportunities on Wednesday before the main conference begins. The Wood Pellet Association of Canada and WorksafeBC are hosting a Wood Products Safety Summit at the Prince George Civic Centre. And the Community Energy Workshop, a gathering of community leaders sharing their perspectives on energy and sustainability, will be hosted by the City of Prince George at the Wood Innovation and Design Centre.

Thursday, June 7 will begin with a keynote address by Anna Tenje, mayor of Växjö, Sweden, named “The Greenest City in Europe.” Then we’ll hear from a distinguished panel of association executives exploring the key issues facing the bioeconomy, followed by three respected industry experts looking at the larger global trends in the industry.

Werner Kurz, senior research scientist with the Canadian Forest Service, will deliver the afternoon keynote address, speaking to the contributions the forest bioeconomy can make to decarbonization and the larger economy. The afternoon sessions include an exploration of governments’ role in the promotion and regulation of the bioeconomy and opportunities in the low carbon economy.

Friday will kick off with keynote speaker, the Hon. George Heyman, British Columbia’s Minister of Environment and Climate Change Strategy, followed by sessions examining shifting pellet markets, new woody biomass applications and local deployment in renewable communities.

Some of you will wrap up the day with a tour of Pinnacle Renewable Energy’s Meadowbank production facility.

Of course we look forward to hosting you at a number of social and networking events on tap at this week’s conference, including the Welcome Reception on Wednesday evening at Crossroads Brewing, and the Networking Reception at the Prince George Civic Centre on Thursday night.

Again, welcome to Prince George. Thank you for attending, and we look forward to meeting and talking with you.

Sandy Ferguson, Conference Chair
